Toughened or reinforced glass (armoured glass) is produced by using a respective cooling process or by adding additional chemical additives to the glass mass. The key point of toughened glass is that certain properties and internal glass stresses making the glass stronger comparing to the usual glass are obtained during production. Toughened glass is also called safe glass (Safe Glass) because it is stronger and splits into many small granules when braking, meanwhile, when the usual glass splits into large pieces with sharp angles and edges.
There are many reasons why toughened glass is used in vehicle industry, it is not only tough enough to function as the body stiffening element, but it also splits into glass granules posing minor risks to human health in case of an accident. Toughened glass is most often used for gazing side and rear windows in cars. Meanwhile a bit different methods are applied for production of windscreens.
If you drive a vehicle wearing sunglasses with polarized glasses, you will notice darker round spots on car glasses – it is an optical effect as crystals of glass mass are located differently in different places within the course of hardening.
Toughened glass is not only used for usual car glasses in vehicle industry, but also for production of armoured glass for “Audi”, “BMW”, “Mercedes” vehicles.
